- Coloration: côté dorsal brunâtre, noirâtre ou grisâtre; côté ventral clair; petites taches brunes sur l'opercule.
- Taille: 20-35 cm (max: 45 cm).
- Poids: 0,2-0,35 kg (max: 0,7 kg).
- Répartition géographique: Atlantique est (de la Mauritanie à l'Angola), Méditerranée.
- Répartition bathymétrique: benthique des fonds sableux et coquilliers, de vase et coralliens entre 15 et 200 m de profondeur.
- Pêche: chaluts de fond, dragues, filets fixes de fond, sennes de plage.
